Services in the Capital City

Roofs, Siding and Windows Built for Bismarck Weather

Most of the calls we take in Bismarck start with the roof, and roofing is the work our crew knows best. The city is hard on every part of a building, though, so each service below is tied to what we see on local homes.

  • Hail damage repair: the July 2022 storm dropped hail up to tennis ball size on northern and eastern Bismarck, and we help owners document the damage for their adjuster.
  • Roof replacement: when shingles have taken one storm too many, a full tear-off and a new roof system give the house a clean start before winter.
  • Siding: new siding tightens up walls that face years of wind and snow, and it gives an older house a fresh face without changing its character.
  • Window replacement: drafty original windows in older neighborhoods can be swapped for tighter units sized to the existing openings. If you are not sure which of these you need, start with an inspection. We walk the roof, look over the siding, gutters and windows, and explain what we see in plain terms, with photos you can keep.
Know the Neighborhoods

From the Cathedral District to the Interstate Corridor

Bismarck was founded in 1872 on the east bank of the Missouri River and has been the state capital since 1889. Its homes cover well over a century. In the Cathedral District near downtown, named for the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, some houses date to the 1880s and many more to the early 1900s.

Houses of that age often have steep roof lines, wood trim and window openings that are not standard sizes. We measure carefully, match the style of the home and keep original details where they are worth saving. A house built in the last few decades usually needs a different plan, often a complete roof system with balanced ventilation and new flashing.

You can see the 19-story State Capitol, finished in 1934, from much of the city, and it is still the tallest building in North Dakota. Whether your home sits near the Capitol grounds, close to Kirkwood Mall or off Interstate 94 and US 83, our shop in town keeps the crew close by for estimates and follow-up visits.

What Winter and Summer Storms Do to a Roof in Burleigh County

Bismarck winters are cold, snowy and windy. January averages close to 13 degrees, and about 50 inches of snow falls in a typical year. Snow that sits on a roof for weeks finds any weak spot in the shingles or flashing, and wind keeps working at loose edges until they lift.

Summer brings a different risk. The June 2001 hail storm damaged homes and vehicles across Bismarck and Mandan, and the 2022 storm brought golf ball sized hail to much of the city. After an event like that, a careful inspection shows whether a roof can be repaired or should be replaced.

Flat and Multifamily Roofs for Bismarck Property Managers

Apartment buildings, offices and storefronts often sit under low-slope roofs that need a different approach from a house. We install and repair TPO and EPDM membranes, two common single-ply systems that cover a flat roof in large sheets with sealed seams. On a building like this, a split seam or a clogged drain can move water a long way before anyone inside notices.

For managers and owners, our property management roofing work starts with an inspection of each building in one round. You get a list of what needs attention now and what can wait, and we schedule the work around tenants and daily business instead of chasing one leak at a time.

Had Draxen construction out to take care of our roof in Bismarck, and they did an excellent job. The crew showed up ready to work, communicated throughout the project, and paid attention to the little details. Everything was done professionally, and they made sure the property was cleaned up before leaving. It's hard to find contractors who take pride in their work but Draxen definitely delivered. Highly recommend them for roofing in the Bismarck area!

Draxen crew came and did vinyl siding on my house. Everything came out just the way I thought it would. Everything was straight and they had cuts really precise. They even went around all the openings with caulk to seal up holes and edges around fixtures on the house. They held themselves in a professional manner while working on my house. When they found an issue with the house they brought it to my attention and we found a solution fairly quickly so they could keep working. They offer multiple solutions and didn’t make me feel strong armed while needing the services. Very good company in all and will be using them again for anything exterior. Very reasonably priced as well.

Bismarck Questions

Answers for Bismarck Property Owners

(701) 504-9808
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Bismarck?

Exterior work inside Bismarck city limits falls under the city's building inspections office, which decides what needs a permit. Before a roof replacement or another large project starts, we check the current requirements for your address and walk you through what applies. Small repairs are often simpler, and we tell you which case yours is before any work begins.

Can you help with an insurance claim after a Bismarck hail storm?

Yes. After hail moves through the city, we inspect the roof, siding, gutters and windows and photograph what we find. We share that documentation with your insurance adjuster and can meet them at the property to point out damage. The insurance company makes the final decision on the claim, and we explain your repair or replacement options either way.

Do you work on older homes in the Cathedral District?

Yes. The Cathedral District holds some of the oldest houses in Bismarck, and they often need more care than a newer build. We look closely at the roof deck, trim and window openings before recommending anything. Our goal is materials and details that respect the age and style of the house while keeping out wind, snow and water.

Do you handle apartment and commercial roofs in Bismarck?

Yes. Along with homes, we roof and maintain apartment buildings, offices and other commercial properties across Bismarck, including flat roofs with TPO and EPDM membranes. Property managers can call to plan inspections, repairs or replacements for one building or a whole group of them, with the work scheduled around tenants and daily business.
